Posts are the whole job

Everything a fence does — staying straight, staying plumb, holding a gate that still closes in year five — comes down to the posts. In Ottawa that means setting them below frost depth so seasonal ground movement cannot lift them, and setting them in line and plumb before anything is attached.

A fence with shallow posts looks identical to a fence with proper posts on the day it is finished. The difference shows up the following spring, when the shallow one has heaved and the gate no longer latches.

Property lines, permits and neighbours

Before a fence goes up it is worth being certain where your property line actually is, and what the City of Ottawa requires for height and placement in your situation — the rules differ between a front yard, a rear yard, and a corner lot, and pool enclosures have their own requirements entirely.

We will raise this during the estimate. Confirming the line and the requirements up front is far cheaper than moving a finished fence, and it keeps a shared-line project on good terms with the neighbour.

Fencing alongside paving work

A lot of our fence work happens on properties where we are already paving, grading or installing interlock. Doing it in the same visit means the grading is coordinated with the fence line, machinery is already on site, and you deal with one contractor and one schedule instead of two.
